Biochemistry of Vitamin B2

Riboflavin is a good source of green leafy vegetables, green leafy vegetables. That means riboflavin is abundant in whatever diet we are taking: vegetarian or non-vegetarian, a perfect amount of vitamin we can see in all these sources.

Coming to the daily requirement of riboflavin, the dietary requirement of riboflavin is about 1.5 milligrams per day. It would be sufficient if you consume 1.5 milligrams of riboflavin through these dietary sources. The active form of riboflavin or also called coenzyme form, are 2; one is FMN, and another one is FAD. These are the active forms of vitamin riboflavin.
What is this FMN? FMN stands for flavin mononucleotide, flavin mononucleotide. Similarly, FAD stands for flavin dinucleotide. These two are essential coenzymes of riboflavin. They play a vital role in carbohydrate metabolism, protein metabolism, lipid metabolism, and nucleic acid metabolism.

Side Effects and Toxicity

  • A high intake of dietary or supplemental riboflavin has no known effects of toxicity.
  • Absorption becomes less efficient at higher doses. Also, minimal amounts are stored in body tissues, and excess riboflavin is flushed out of the body with urine.
  • As a result, the safe upper intake level of riboflavin has not been established.

The Essential Functions

They act as an electron carrier for an oxide reduction reaction. So this reaction can occur in amino acid, protein, carbohydrate, lipid, and electron transport chain and help in the maintenance of mucosal cell integrity.

That means inflammation of the mouth’s angle, angular stomatitis, cheilosis, cheilosis means again fissure in the lip or the angle of the mouth.

If there any inflammation in the mouth’s angle, we call angular stomatitis, any infection, or inflammation. If there any fissure in the mouth’s angle, we call CHEI stands for lip okay. It is cheilosis, and Glossitis is inflammation of the tongue. Glossitis means inflammation of the tongue.

Riboflavin deficiency is very rare because it is abundant in almost all the food we are consuming. Whenever there is a deficiency of riboflavin, we also see other water-soluble vitamins’ efficiency, other water-soluble vitamins.
